Shell-Fish Desires – Patterns of exploitation, utilisation and consumption of maritime fauna in Prehistoric Cyprus
This presentation is part of my ongoing project on the utilisation of marine fauna on Prehistoric Cyprus. During the Bronze Age the Cypriot society went through many changes and developments, in many ways connected to the increased interaction with societies on the mainland, across the Mediterranean sea. Historically, studies on Cyprus and the sea have focused on aspects such as seafaring, trade and the exchange of cultural ideas and customs.
My thesis puts focus on the more local marine interaction: the exploitation, utilisation and consumption of marine fauna. The aim is to gain insight into how the ancient Cypriots utilised the sea within the local material culture as well as the role it played in the social customs.
In this seminar, I will give a short recap of my project, my material and what I hope to accomplish. I will also offer an overview of how I intend to structure my thesis as well as present some of the relevant contexts from my material and my ongoing thoughts on both how to interpret them and fit them within my project (hopefully subjects of fruitful discussions!).
