Shell-Fish Desires – Patterns of exploitation, utilisation and consumption of maritime fauna in Prehistoric Cyprus
This presentation is part of my ongoing project on the utilisation of marine fauna on Prehistoric Cyprus. During the Bronze Age the Cypriot society went through numerous changes, in many ways connected to the increased interaction with societies on the mainland, across the Mediterranean sea. Historically, studies on Cyprus and the sea have focused on aspects such as seafaring, trade and the exchange of cultural ideas and customs. My thesis puts focus on the more local marine interaction: the exploitation, utilisation and consumption of marine fauna. In order to achieve this, I apply a biographical method to my study, looking at the different paths that marine fauna travelled in the ancient Cypriot society. More specifically, through the actions of acquisition, modification, consumption and deposition of marine fauna. 

This seminar will be a partial overview of chapter 4 of my thesis, specifically the different methods of acquisition that can be determined based on the characteristics of marine fauna found in archaeological contexts.
