Portrayals of Pain and Models of Masculinity: The Suffering Male Body in Western Art and Culture
The project explores the impact of classical antiquity on subsequent modes of representing pain in Western literary, visual, and performative arts. It investigates how the conventions of Greek mythology and the Roman exemplary tradition influenced the portrayal of suffering during the Christian Middle Ages and contributed to the formation of new national and social identities in modern-era Europe. Special attention is given to the intersecting relationship between pain and gender, examining how evolving representations of the suffering male body reflect shifting values, ideals, and identities associated with masculinity.
