Master's Programme in Asian Studies, 120 credits

The Master’s programme in Asian Studies is a regionally-focused multidisciplinary program grounded in the Humanities and offered by the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. It is designed for students with background in Chinese, Japanese and Korean Studies who wish to broaden their understanding of East Asia.

The two-year programme combines a wide range of content courses with advanced language training. Fields of possible specialization of MA research projects include translation studies and linguistics, literature, visual and performative arts, media cultures, cultural heritage and modern policies.

The programme consists of four semesters of full-time studies. During the first two semesters students take compulsory and elective courses (60 ECTS). The third semester (30 ECTS) provides an opportunity for exchange studies at another university in East Asia or Europe, internships, or taking elective courses offered at the Department and across Stockholm University as well as other universities or institutions of higher education in Sweden (or a combination of these three options). The fourth semester is devoted to the degree project, which entails writing a master’s thesis (30 ECTS). The thesis writing and all course instructions are conducted in English.

With its flexible programme format, the MA in Asian Studies allows students to tailor their studies in accordance with their interests or career ambitions. The programme prepares students for a diversity of careers in the public and private sector that require analytical thinking, deep knowledge of East Asia and relevant language skills. The students who graduate from the programme are also eligible to proceed to third cycle education in Asian Studies.

 

Master's Programme in Middle Eastern Studies, 120 credits

The Master's Programme in Middle Eastern Studies is an interdisciplinary program that provides in-depth knowledge of the Middle Eastern and North African societies, as well as area studies as an academic discipline. The program has two study paths; Arabic and Area studies.

Study path 1 (Middle Eastern Language and Cultures with a focus on Arabic) is aimed at students who have already studied Arabic and provides in-depth training in the Arabic language by developing the student's ability to use Arabic source material in scientific analysis.

Study path 2 (Middle Eastern Language and Cultures with a focus on Area Studies) is aimed at students who have not studied Arabic or want to focus on regional studies and provides advanced studies in Middle Eastern and North African societies.

The program's common courses deals with both Area studies in general and the Middle East and North Africa specifically, as well as scientific methodology and academic writing. The program also offers students the opportunity to select a number of courses in other subjects.

Within the framework of the elective courses, the student can choose to do an internship, field studies and study abroad at a university in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The program prepares students for work within the private sector, the government, international organisations, research and development, as well as media and journalism, which requires in-depth knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa and/or good knowledge of the Arabic language.

The program also provides eligibility for studies at graduate level.
