Taiwan’s Settler Colonial History and Cultural Production

Map: Wikipedia

Taiwan’s settler colonial past, and its continued colonization in the present, involves multiple colonialisms and serial waves of Han Chinese immigrants beginning in the seventeenth century. The Han settlers outnumbered Indigenous populations in Taiwan and became the demographic majority of this island since the late seventeenth century. More specifically, the intersection of multiple colonialisms (including the Dutch, the Spanish, the Japanese, and so on) and the Han settler colonial structure of Taiwan have not only shaped the island’s unique ethnoscape but also its diverse body of cultural production throughout the course of Taiwan’s history. This lecture will look at Taiwan’s history through the lens of settler colonial studies, and discuss how this history has formed the island’s specific and complex cultural landscape, particularly during the postwar period (1945-).

Lin-chin Tsai is currently assistant professor of the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature and Transnational Cultural Studies at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. at UCLA, USA, with a focus on Taiwan as a settler colony and its cultural productions.

The Monday Lecture Series: Taiwan Literature and Culture in Focus is curated by Prof. Irmy Schweiger, Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies.
