Why Queer Literature in Taiwan Matters

In 1995 writer and literary critic Chi Ta-wei published The Membranes, a groundbreaking work of queer speculative fiction. Twenty-five years after its initial publication in Chinese, the Australian scholar Ari Larissa Heinrich, known for their translation of Qiu Miaojin's last novel, has produced an English-language translation of this novel. This online event will contextualize The Membranes in the history of queer literature in Taiwan, upon which Chi published a monograph: Tongzhi wenxueshi (A History of Tongzhi Literature in Taiwan).
 

Chi Ta-wei (紀大偉) is a writer and scholar from Taiwan. Chi’s scholarly work focuses on LGBT studies, disability studies, and Sinophone literary history, while his award-winning creative writing ranges from science fiction to queer short stories. The English translation of his science fiction novel The Membranes is published in summer 2021. He is an associate professor of Taiwanese literature at the National Chengchi University.
