The department has education within the Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages, as well as area studies within the two main areas: Asian Languages and Cultures and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures.

Among our freestanding courses we offer both day time and evening courses that are given in English.

Japanese language and culture

Do you like manga and anime, Japanese music and literature? Would you like to learn more about Japanese culture and society? Then Japanese studies is the subject for you! Around the world, more than 128 million people have Japanese as their mother tongue. A sound grasp of the Japanese language will allow you insights into modern institutions, traditional practices and lived experiences from an insider perspective.

Studies at the Bachelor's level (First cycle studies)
During the course of your studies you will primarily engage in language studies, but also 22,5 credits from a wide variety of subjects aimed at widening your knowledge of Japanese culture and society, such as courses in Japanese popular culture, history, literature and performing arts.
Beginner courses in Japanese are offered every autumn semester as part of the six semesters required to attain a bachelor’s degree. All courses are offered as freestanding courses.
During your sixth semester you will produce a bachelor’s thesis partly based on Japanese language sources.
We have exchange programmes with several Japanese universities in order to provide you the opportunity to study Japanese in Japan.
Studies at the Master's level (Second cycle studies)
Programme
After completing your bachelor’s degree, you will be eligible to enrol in our two-year Master’s Programme in Asian Studies, which affords an opportunity to deepen your skills in Japanese language and culture, as well as learning more about Asia as a region.
During the master’s programme you will have the opportunity to study abroad or participate in an internship. With a master’s degree you will also be eligible to apply to our doctoral programme.
Courses at the Master's level
We offer a few freestanding courses at the master's level. Some of the courses are part of the master's programme and are not available for application as a stand-alone course.
Courses on the advanced level usually requires a Bachelor's Degree in Asian Languages and Cultures, or the equivalent.

Chinese language and culture

China is the world’s most populous nation and second largest economy. China is constantly changing, and through studying Chinese you gain access to its rich culture, thousand-year-old history and fascinating social development. Not to mention being able to communicate with more than a billion Chinese speakers!
During the course of your studies you will gain proficiency in modern standardized Chinese, Putonghua. The courses are 75% language, and 25% content courses on a variety of subjects, such as Chinese history, traditional culture and politics.

Korean language and culture

Interest in South Korea has increased markedly during the last decades, due to the country’s growing role in the world economy, its technical innovations, and exciting popular culture and beauty industry. Korean is the 16th most widespread language in the world, spoken by more than 78 million people.
During your studies in Korean you will primarily be engaged in language studies, but you will also have the opportunity to take 30 credits in courses aimed at expanding your understanding of Korean society and culture, such as courses in Korean history, traditional culture and political relations.
Studies at Bachelor's level (First cycle studies)
Beginner courses in Korean are offered every autumn semester, as part of the six semesters required to attain a bachelor’s degree. All courses are offered as freestanding courses.
During your sixth semester you will produce a bachelor’s thesis partly based on Korean language sources.
You will also be afforded the opportunity to study Korean in South Korea through one of Stockholm University’s many exchange programs.

Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies

Interest in the Middle East and North Africa has increased with the recent developments in the regions. This has resulted in an increasing need for people with knowledge about the contemporary developments in the Middle East and North Africa. Arabic is one of the world’s five most widely spoken languages, and the primary language throughout the region with more than 300 million speakers.
Within the area Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures you can choose two study paths:

Arabic with Middle Eastern and North African Studies
Courses
During the course of your studies on the bachelor´s level you will gain proficiency in modern standardized Arabic, as well as knowledge about the literature, history, religion, economics, politics and social developments in the Middle East and North Africa.
Most first cycle courses are taught in Swedish and requires a documented knowledge of Swedish.
Programme
The Bachelor's programme in Arabic with specialisation in Middle Eastern and North African Studies is a three-year programme, 180 credits (ECTS). The programme leads to a Bachelor's degree in Middle Eastern Lagugages and Cultures.
Middle Eastern and North African Studies
Courses
Beginner courses are offered during the autumn semester, comprising three semesters culminating in the production of a bachelor’s thesis. In order to receive a bachelor’s degree you are required to enrol in another 90 credits of courses within subjects of your choice, such as political science, economics, anthropology, ethnology, education, sociology, history or linguistics.
Programme
The Bachelor's Programme in Middle Eastern and North African Studies is an interdisciplinary programme.
The programme provides in-depth knowledge of the early and modern history of the Middle East and North Africa, religions, literature and culture, as well as political and economic development. The programme leads to a Bachelor's degree in Middle Eastern Lagugages and Cultures.
Studies at the Master's level (Second cycle studies)
After completing your bachelor’s degree, you will be eligible to enrol in our Master’s Programme, which affords an opportunity to deepen your skills in Arabic and/or Middle Eastern and North African Studies.
Programme
The Master's Programme in Middle Eastern Studies is an interdisciplinary program that provides in-depth knowledge of the Middle Eastern and North African societies, as well as area studies as an academic discipline.
The program has two study paths; Arabic and Area studies.
Study path 1 (Arabic) is aimed at students who have already studied Arabic and provides in-depth training in the Arabic language by developing the student's ability to use Arabic source material in scientific analysis.
Study path 2 (Area studies) is aimed at students who have not studied Arabic or want to focus on regional studies and provides advanced studies in Middle Eastern and North African societies.
The program's common courses deals with both Area studies in general and the Middle East and North Africa specifically, as well as scientific methodology and academic writing. The program also offers students the opportunity to select a number of courses in other subjects. Within the framework of the elective courses, the student can choose to do an internship, field studies and study abroad at a university in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Doctoral studies (Third cycle studies)
The Department offers third cycle studies (Doctoral studies) in two main areas: Asian languages and cultures, and Middle Eastern languages and cultures. Both programs consist of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary area studies, and are characterised in that a substantial part of the material consists of both primary and secondary sources in the source language determined by the thesis project.
Dcotoral studies in Asian languages and cultures consist of area studies with the focus on one or more of the main language and culture areas Japan, China and Korea.
Doctoral studies in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures consist of area studies with the focus on one or more of the main language and culture areas in the Middle East and North Africa.
