The Department of Astronomy conducts teaching and research that covers the entire field of astronomy. The department also houses the Institute of Solar Physics
The work to install a new telescope at AlbaNova University Centre just started. The telescope has a diameter of 80 cm and will be used for public shows, education, and for research in quantum optics. On Wednesday the 10th of September the new telescope was moved into place by a large crane.
On 1 July 1973, Stockholm's observatory was transferred from the Royal Academy of Sciences to Stockholm University and the Department of astronomy at Stockholm University was born. The names "Stockholms observatory" and "The Department of Astronomy" have since been synonymous.
