Traineeship: General information

Information and assessment criteria for Research traineeship in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioinformatics or Neurochemistry I or II (KB5012 and KB5013). Advanced research traineeship in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioinformatics or Neurochemistry I or II (KB7019 and KB8026)

Overview

All research traineeships give 7.5 credits. Being enrolled on a 7.5 credit research traineeship implies full time work (40 h / week) for 4.5 weeks.

The traineeship is assessed in the following ways:

  • by a laboratory notebook
  • by an oral presentation of the project
  • by a short report (only KB7019 and KB8026).

The grades are either pass or fail and are decided by the supervising teaching staff member.

A student who is enrolled in several traineeships has to give only one presentation at the end of the traineeship. The presentation should be 20 min for a 7.5 credits traineeship, 30 min for two 7.5 credits traineeships and 40 min for more than two traineeships.

Assessment criteria

  • The text is written in English and entirely in the student's own words without plagiarism
  • The text is clear and spelling, grammar, and formalities are largely correct
  • For each experiment/computation the notebook states
    • the date of the experiment/computation
    • the aim of the experiment/computation
    • relevant preparations
    • experimental or computational details
    • results
    • conclusions

Criteria for passing the oral presentation

For pass, all of the following criteria have to be fulfilled:

Content

  • An introduction into the scientific background of project is given, which is largely correct
  • An introduction into the method used is given, which is largely correct
  • The scientific terminology is largely correct
  • Relevant results are presented and correct conclusions drawn from the obtained results
  • The results are discussed in the context of previous research
  • The student answers correctly to relevant questions

Formalities

  • The oral presentation has the required duration (20/30/40 min for 7.5/15/>15 credits traineeships)
  • The presentation is clear and structured
  • The English is largely correct
  • Reference is given for all images that are not produced by the student

Criteria for the report (only KB7019 and KB8026)

  • The length of the report is 1-2 pages
  • The report contains a description of
    • the generic competences trained during the traineeship
    • the methods applied and the kind of results that these methods may provide
