The prize is awarded annually to recognise researchers who have made outstanding contributions to materials science and engineering. Lennart Bergström receives the 2025 prize in recognition of his scientific excellence and long-standing commitment to addressing global sustainability challenges through advanced research. He is particularly recognised for his contributions to colloid chemistry, focusing on the synthesis and assembly of nanoparticles, non-classical crystallisation processes, and the development of mesocrystals.
Lennart Bergström is an internationally renowned researcher working at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, and sustainable development. His research has deepened scientific understanding of colloidal systems and the behaviour of nanoparticles, leading to practical innovations in sustainable materials, such as thermal insulation foams made from waste and bio-based resources, as well as textile fibre recycling. He also leads the Master’s Programme in Sustainable Chemistry at Stockholm University.
In addition to his scientific achievements, Lennart Bergström is actively involved in shaping the future of sustainable science both in Sweden and internationally. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), part of the university reference group for the Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability (WISE), and Deputy Director of the MISTRA programme SafeChem.
