Intimate with Modernism
Forum Modernism at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, Stockholm University, arranged the symposium "Intimate with Modernism". A panel discussion between modernist scholars Bryony Randall (University of Glasgow), Jane Goldman (University of Glasgow), Elsa Högberg (Uppsala University) and Axel Englund (Stockholm University), followed by a workshop on the concept of modernism for PhD students.

About the theme
It is an indication of the versatility of modernism that it has been defined in such a vast variety of ways: historical, aesthetic, ideological and otherwise. Texts ranging from 19th-century novels to 21st-century digital poetry have been characterized as modernist, and the term has been applied to primitivist rejections of modernity as well as manifestos celebrating human progress and technological advancement. The concept, then, is elusive – perhaps to the point of nebulousness. How can this flexibility and complexity be utilized with precision in academic discourse? How, in short, can we become intimate with modernism?
Such questions will be explored in the panel discussion and in the ensuing collaborative workshop bringing together PhD students researching modernist literature with experts in the field.
