Musicology studies music as a sounding, noted and mediated phenomenon within the framework of structural, historical, ethnological and multimedia contexts.

The musicological research conducted at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics is characterised by great diversity. However, there is an emphasis on music history (especially Swedish music and musical life from the mid-18th century to present day), music theory and music analysis, and music in relation to other media (media technology, medialization, intermediality), including theories and methodologies from narratology and cultural studies in research on multimedia art forms such as opera and film music.
