New Mistra project recieves funding

New Mistra program on 'Governing Critical Raw Material Supply Chains for a Sustainable Transition' at the Department of Economic History and International Relations and the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University.

The research program Governing Critical Raw Material Supply Chains for a Sustainable Transition, starting in January 2024, is awarded SEK 20 million over four years. Lund University will host the program with André Månberger as program manager. The consortium includes the Stockholm Environment Institute, Stockholm University, the Institute for Foreign Affairs and the Norwegian Institute for Foreign Affairs. The program will also involve actors across the supply chain, civil society, public authorities, and international organizations.

The work package at Stockholm University (The Governance and Policy-making of Critical Raw Materials) will develop governance solutions for how decision-makers could address goal conflicts and reconcile legislation on critical minerals with democratic values and the aim to increase effective governance. This research provides unique opportunities as there is only limited knowledge about how to manage the goal conflicts emerging due to the increased use of minerals that are critical in the transition to a fossil-free society.

Lisa Dellmuth, professor of international relations and leader of the work package at Stockholm University.

- We will engage in interdisciplinary research on domestic, regional and global policies and goal conflicts arising from society’s use of minerals that are central to the green transition, says Lisa Dellmuth, professor of international relations and leader of the work package at Stockholm University. Project collaborators at Stockholm University are Maria-Therese Gustafsson, docent in political science, Matilda Petersson, postdoc in international relations, and Mark Rhinard, professor of international relations and research director at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.
