The Department of Economics is a member of the Erasmus+ Programme. If you want to come here on an international exchange you will need to be nominated by your home university exchange office.

When nominated by your home university, you will receive important information by e-mail and instructions of how to apply for courses. Before your arrival, you will receive an Admission Letter and we will sign your Learning Agreement. You should send an official transcript of records listing previous studies.

English-taught courses are offered at Intermediate level and Master's Programme level.
All available courses at Intermediate and Master's Programme levels yield 7.5 credits each. 4 courses equal full-time studies and students are recommended not to take more than 30 credits per term.

Exchange students studying at the Department of Economics for a full academic year will choose courses for the spring term in November.

The Swedish higher education credit system

The Swedish higher education credit system is fully integrated into ECTS, the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. One Swedish higher education credit (sometimes called credit, HE credit or hp) is equivalent to one ECTS credit.

Studying Economics at the Department of Economics

The subject of Economics is divided between different departments at Stockholm University: the Department of Economics offers courses in Economics, and Stockholm Business School in Business/Finance. Exchange students accepted by the Department of Economics at Stockholm University will study Economics, and not Business/Finance.

Courses with other departments

Exchange students at the Department of Economics will be expected to take at least 3 of 4 courses at the department. If there are no courses during a certain period that you can take, please contact the International coordinator to see if you could take a course at another department. Please note that other departments are not obliged to take on exchange students from the Department of Economics.

For Intermediate level you are required to have at least 30 credits in Economics at basic level. Please note that some courses may also have additional prerequisites.

The requirement for exchange students who want to study at the Master Programme level is the equivalent of a Bachelor degree in Economics (180 credits in total, with at least 90 credits in Economics - and 90 credits in other subjects). Please note that some courses may also have additional prerequisites.

Exchange students who have been nominated for studies at Intermediate level cannot take courses at Master level. Exchange students who have been nominated for studies at Master's level may take courses at Intermediate level.

Some courses may collide with each other, especially if you are planning to take courses at both Intermediate and Master's level. Students are therefore advised to check the schedules to see which courses can be combined and which collide.

We strongly advise you to apply for student housing, due to the difficulties in finding accommodation in the Stockholm area. Unfortunately, exchange students are not guaranteed student housing, since the number of incoming exchange students may exceed the number of student rooms available each term.

Practical information for new students

During the first week of the semester, an introduction meeting is held for exchange students at the Department of Economics. Date, time and place for this meeting will be sent to you by e-mail.

Please note, that this meeting is organised by the Department of Economics and is separate from the Welcome Activities organised by the International Office at Stockholm University. You should attend both events.

The International Office, together with the Student Union, host the Stockholm University Welcome activities during the week before the autumn term/during the first week of the spring term.
