On 15 March, the Riksbank’s General Council decided to appoint Anna Seim as the new Deputy Governor, succeeding Martin Flodén, whose term ends in May 2024. Anna Seim’s first monetary policy meeting will be on 26 June.

Anna Seim is a Professor of Economics and Deputy Head of the Department of Economics at Stockholm University. She is also the director of the Center for Monetary Policy and Financial Stability (CeMoF) at the university.

Her research focuses on how monetary and fiscal policies affect wage formation, exchange rates, and the relationship between political institutions and long-term growth. She also teaches macroeconomics at the Department of Economics.

In addition to her research and teaching, Anna Seim holds several external positions, including serving as a member of the board of the Financial Supervisory Authority, the Swedish Fiscal Policy Council, and the Scientific Advisory Council of the Swedish National Debt Office.

Anna Seim has a solid academic background and in-depth insight into how central banks affect the economy.

Regarding the decision, the Chair of the General Council, Bo Broman, and Vice Chair Tomas Eneroth stated: ”We are very pleased to be able to present a new highly qualified person as member of the Executive Board. Anna Seim has a solid academic background and in-depth insight into how central banks affect the economy. She will be a good complement to the other members of the Executive Board, and we are also very pleased that our decision was unanimous.”

The Department of Economics has several professors in the Riksbank executive board. Martin Flodén, whom Anna Seim now replaces, is currently on leave. Karolina Ekholm, who served as Deputy Governor of the Riksbank from 2009 to 2014, has been the head of the Swedish National Debt Office since 2022.
