”External regulations for grading systems are necessary”

Jonas Vlachos, Professor of Economics at Stockholm University, is interviewed on Agenda about grade inflation in upper secondary schools.

After years of debate about grade inflation in upper secondary schools, a recent study by the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) shows that students from independent schools perform worse during their first year of higher education.

In an interview with SVT’s Agenda, Jonas Vlachos points to reports from the past twenty years showing that independent schools grade more generously than municipal schools. According to Jonas Vlachos, the major problem is that there are no external regulations for grading systems.
