Niklas Wykman presented the spring budget

The government submitted the 2024 spring fiscal policy bill and spring amending budget on 15 April. Minister for Financial Markets Niklas Wykman visited Stockholm University for a presentation the same day.

During the government’s press conference, Minister for Finance Elisabeth Svantesson referred to the weak growth and rising unemployment as ”an economic winter.” At his visit with Stockholm University, Niklas Wykman discussed that the Swedish recession is expected to continue until 2025.

Despite this, the government anticipates an improved economy for households in 2024, with lower inflation and rising wages. However, interest expenditure is expected to remain high throughout the year, affecting purchasing power and consumption.

The visit was well-attended by economics students that took the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation. Several students addressed housing shortages and the vulnerable housing market. Niklas Wykman believes there is justification for reviewing the regulations governing the housing market and housing financing, but increased costs and weak demand are expected to continue to burden housing investments in 2024.

The government will address the economic situation with a three-part plan, which you can find more detailed information about in the links below:

  • Fight inflation and support households and welfare.
  • Re-institute the work-first principle.
  • Structural reforms to stimulate growth.

The visit was organised by the Department of Economics at Stockholm University.
