Title: Conditions for workplace learning in the performing arts after #metoo

Abstract

This paper analyses the workplace learning that is taking place in rehearsal work in the performing arts industry following the #MeToo petition. We ask what discursive conditions shape rehearsal work, and what mechanisms practitioners use to control and legitimize the ways in which rehearsal work is conducted.

Using Foucauldian discourse, we analyze three sequences from two stage productions, taken from 80 hours of video. Focusing on learning around intimacy, violence and sexuality, the analysis highlights the power relations embedded in the actions of the practitioners and the policies and guidelines that frame rehearsal work.

A short presentation of the project Culture of Silence. Experiences, Policies and Methods in Combating Sexual Harassment in the Performing Arts after #MeToo will be added to the presentation.

Title: Legitimations of a “reversed racism” discourse in Swedish parliamentary discourse 2010–2014.

Abstract

In my presentation, I will share preliminary results from a study conducted by me and my colleagues, Peter Wikström and Tobias Hübinette.

The study explores how the discourse about Swedophobia (svenskfientlighet) has emerged and been legitimised as a form of reverse racism in the parliamentary work of the Sweden Democrats, more specifically in interpellations, motions and debates since the party entered the Swedish parliament in 2010.

The study examines what legitimation strategies (van Leeuwen 2007) are used by SD, who they position as perpetrators and victims of Swedophobia, and who they position as the producers and promoters of Swedophobia in Swedish policy work.

Bio note from Karin Idevall Hagren

My research primarily concerns discourse analytical perspectives on social phenomena such as discrimination, national identities and cultural norms.
