PhD Studies

The doctoral programme at the Department of English is divided into two sections, specialising in English Linguistics or in English-language Literature.

As a PhD student you will be contributing to the research from Stockholm University and to the research environment at the Department of English. The doctoral studies include writing an independently researched thesis. The purpose of the thesis is to contribute to the development of knowledge in your subject area.

Programme

The duration of the doctoral programme is four years and corresponds to eight semesters (terms) of full-time studies (240 Higher Education Credits). At the Department of English, the PhD position is also combined with 20% other work at the department per semester throughout your studies, adding a full year to the programme. The first two semesters of the graduate programme are normally devoted to the reading of courses (60 HECs) while the following three years are spent on dissertation work (180 HECs). In actual practice the two often overlap.

Applying for PhD studies

Information on the eligibility requirements for doctoral studies in English can be found in the general study plan. This includes the specific entry requirements, such as required previous studies and documentation of proficiency in English in the form of an international language test.

PhD positions are advertised in coordination with the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University. Further details about a position will be available when it is advertised, along with contact details.

When we have a vacant PhD position at the department, it will be advertised on the Stockholm University website. This occurs in conjunction with other applications to the university but not necessarily every semester and every year. Application deadlines are usually 15 April and 15 October for entry the following semester, with available postitions announced one month before the deadline. Keep an eye on the website for advertisements of vacant positions. If you send in an application that does not refer to such an advertisement, it will not – as a rule – be taken under consideration.
