Space & Place Field School in Rome, October 2023

From the 9th to the 13th of October, two generations of participants of the Space & Place in the Humanities course and doctoral school assembled in Rome for a dynamic and engaging field school. Fraser Miller, PhD Candidate at the Department of History at Stockholm University, shares his experiences from the course.

The first two mornings took place at the Swedish Institute, where doctoral students presented their research projects. The afternoons and subsequent days were filled with captivating excursions to various historical sites in Rome, where both doctoral students and course instructors delivered presentations on the history of the location or monument, connecting it to the spatial theme of the course and their own research.

Adam Lundberg, PhD Candidate at the Department of Human Geography at Uppsala Universitet, presents his research about ”the memory landscapes of global diasporas and migration” at the Museo Barracco de Escultura Antigua in Rom.

The topics covered in these presentations were diverse, ranging from exploring the history of Rome's Aurelian Wall and city walls as a spatial-theoretical concept, street art in Ostiense and its social function and context, to the 17th Century Japanese mission to the Vatican and the historico-political implications of its artistic representation in the Quirinal Palace.

Participants continued to exchange knowledge and ideas in the off-hours of the course, whether it was relaxing on a quiet piazza over a cold spritz or enjoying group dinners throughout the week. The 2023 Space & Place Field School in Rome provided a rich and immersive experience, convincing all who took part in the strengths of interdisciplinarity, spatial theory, and field study.
