To Compare or Not to Compare – That is the Question

Conference

Date: Wednesday 22 May 2024

Time: 10.00 – 17.30

Location: Stockholm University

The Research Panel for Comparative Commercial Law at Stockholm Centre for Commercial Law (SCCL), Faculty of Law, Stockholm University, invites to a Postgraduate Conference on the theme "To Compare or Not to Compare – That is the Question".

This postgraduate conference is for PhD researchers working on dissertations with a comparative angle. The conference aims to shed some light on the wide array of comparative work that exists today. It is open to doctoral candidates from all disciplines of law, conducting comparative research in a broad sense. The conference offers an exceptional opportunity for doctoral candidates to present and discuss their research with colleagues and experts in comparative law. The methodology of comparative law, especially why it is needed in legal research, will be discussed throughout the day.

The event concludes with a lecture given by Professor Birke Häcker, Schlegel Chair in Civil Law, Common Law and Comparative Law and the Director of the Institute of International and Comparative Law at the University of Bonn. She will be reflecting on the purpose(s) of conducting comparative legal research, its value to the ‘ordinary’ study of national law and its relationship with doctrinal scholarship.

The conference precedes the 29th General Meeting of the Common Core of European Private Law, which is organized by the Faculty of Law and the Research Panel for Comparative Commercial Law at SCCL, Stockholm University. The participants of the postgraduate conference are welcome to attend the General Meeting, which will take place on 23–24 May 2024 in Stockholm.
