The legendary blog IPKAt is the most higly ranked Intellectual Property Law blogs on an international level. At the beginning of each year, its readers submit nominations for the previous year's best book in five different categories of intellectual property law; Patent, Trade mark, Copyright, Design and Intellectual Property.

For 2023, a total of five books in copyright were nominated. Of these, Eleonora Rosati's book "Copyright and the Court of Justice of the European Union" was chosen as the best in the category. It has been reviewed by, among others, Maciej Szpunar, Advocate General of the European Court of Justice, who wrote;

"This extremely profound analysis by Professor Rosati of EU copyright protection and relevant Court of Justice decisions constitutes uncharted territory, unveiling new information, and presenting ideas, which will serve academics and practitioners, including members of the Court, such as myself, alike. Professor Rosati's book addresses, from an original and forward-thinking perspective, some of the most complex, challenging, and pressing aspects of the EU copyright framework. I am certain that the second edition of the book will contribute to an awareness of the many challenges facing copyright protection, both on the EU and global level, as well as the importance of EU law and the role of the Court of Justice."

Addresses what has happened since 2019

Eleonora Rosati is Professor of Intellectual Property Law and former Director of the Institute for Intellectual Property and Market Law at Stockholm University. She has repeatedly been named as a particularly influential person in her field and is the author of several articles and books on intellectual property law. In 2021, she also won the IPKat award for the best book on copyright, for the book "Copyright in the Digital Single Market".

This year's award-winning book, "Copyright and the Court of Justice of the European Union", was first released in early 2019 and remains the only book exclusively devoted to the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in the EU copyright field. The new edition captures all significant developments in EU copyright law that have occurred since 2019. These include events such as the UK's departure from the EU and the adoption of the Digital Single Market Directive (2019/790), but also several other crucial judgments which touch upon all the main foundational aspects of EU copyright.

The book not only provides a deeper understanding of the CJEU's central role in copyright law, but also serves as a guide that highlights the direction of the Court's future jurisprudence. By "cleaning up" and rationalizing the judgments issued to date, it offers a valuable insight into the developments shaping European copyright law, and thus becomes an indispensable resource for anyone navigating this complex area of law.
