Open course: Introduction to European Legal Systems

Introduction to European Legal Systems is a free web-based course given under the auspices of the CIVIS (European Civic University Alliance) cooperation. Starting on October 1st, and over the course of 11 weeks, students will be able to learn about the various legal systems of 8 different European nations.

The CIVIS cooperation brings together over 450,000 students and 65,000 employees at nine universities in Europe: Université d’Aix-Marseille (France), National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece), University of Bucharest (Romania), Université libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain), Sapienza Università di Roma (Italy), Stockholm University, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Germany) and the University of Glasgow (UK).

Introduction to European Legal Systems provides students with two 2-hour lectures on the legal systems of 8 of the CIVIS member countries. The course is not being given for credit, but can be seen as providing the fundamentals of these legal systems for comparative purposes, focusing on various topics such as general legal theory, civil law, public law and the criminal law of the respective country.
