SU Law Team Clinches Best Newcomer Team Award in IBA ICC Moot Court Competition

The Department of Law at Stockholm University is proud to announce that the university's team has emerged the Best Newcomer Team Award in the prestigious IBA ICC moot court competition held in The Hague, 2-9 June 2023.

The team, comprising Maanpreet Kaur, Marc Ruffing, Mariam Mandekov, Jennifer Boyaci, and Duyen Ha Nguyen, demonstrated exceptional skills and legal acumen throughout the competition, earning them the esteemed Best Newcomer Team Award. The dedicated guidance and mentorship provided by coaches Dr Fabricio Fortese (Director of Mooting Activities at the Department of Law) and professor Mark Klamberg played a vital role in the team's remarkable achievement.

The IBA ICC moot court competition, organised by the The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies at Leiden University, is an internationally renowned event that brings together talented law students from across the globe to showcase their legal prowess. This year, the competition witnessed fierce competition among teams representing various esteemed universities. Stockholm University's team stood out among the participants, not only for their impressive performance but also for their unique composition.

What made Stockholm University's team particularly special was its diverse composition, comprising students from both the international LL.M. program in public international law and the Swedish law program. This fusion of legal expertise and perspectives proved to be the recipe for success for the team, allowing them to tackle complex legal challenges with a comprehensive and well-rounded approach. The SU Law takes immense pride in the achievements of its students and acknowledges the dedication, hard work, and extensive preparation that the winning team displayed throughout the competition. 

What is the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition?

The IBA ICC (International Bar Association International Criminal Court) moot court competition is an esteemed international legal competition that simulates the proceedings of the International Criminal Court. It provides law students with a unique opportunity to engage in a mock trial setting and showcase their legal skills and knowledge in the field of international criminal law.

The competition brings together teams from universities around the world, who compete against each other in arguing and presenting legal arguments related to a fictional case before a panel of judges. The case is typically based on real-life international criminal law issues, allowing participants to delve into complex legal scenarios and demonstrate their understanding of international criminal law principles, evidence, and courtroom procedures.
