ConSIMium is a European Council simulation experience in which 27 teams of students from all EU member states experience first-hand the negotiations between member states and the decision-making process at European level. Over two days, 2-3 February 2023, the students will negotiate and find agreements on complex EU issues in the form of a case study prepared by the EU. The work will be carried out as if a real EU decision-making process were taking place, with students taking on the roles of ministers, prime ministers, ambassadors, national experts, etc.

A total of 162 students (6 per member state) and 27 national coordinators have been selected at national level on the basis of agreed principles and criteria. Sweden will be represented by six students from three different departments at Stockholm University; three from the Department of Political Science, two from the Department of Law and one from the Department of Media Studies. They will be accompanied by the national coordinator, Christian Antoni Möllerop, Administrative Director of Studies and Head of Administration, Department of Political Science.

Representing the role as Presidency

The students are competing as a team, but have different roles and will participate alone in the different meetings. Between the different meetings they have to update their team members. Since Sweden is currently holding the Presidency of the EU Council, it will be the Swedish students who have to moderate the discussion.

– My goal is to do this in the best way possible, says Hannah Bischoff, LL.M. student in European Economic Law at the Department of Law, Stockholm University, who has been assigned the role of an national expert. She continues;

– I was very happy when I was nominated for the team. It will be interesting to get to know the EU Council and to gain a deeper understanding of the work of the EU Council. Furthermore, I am looking forward to putting my knowledge about the EU Council’s procedures into practice. In addition, it will be great to meet other students from all EU Member States and to have interesting discussions about the selected topic during the simulation.

About ConSIMium

This year's edition of ConSIMium is the first to be held. It's organised by the General Secretariat of the Council. The goal is to let the students participating in the experience to gain a better understand of the role of the member states in EU decision-making, learn more about how the institutions of the EU work (in particular the Council), develop the sense of belonging to a European project and get an insight into future professional opportunities and inspiration for a future career in the public service.
