In the Department of Linguistics, we are concerned with the discipline of linguistics as such, and with sign language. Related areas such as language education and the study of particular languages are in other departments.

If your home university has an agreement with us you can be nominated to come as an exchange student. Find our partner universities:

The application process

The application process for exchange students is different from that for other international students. Read these instructions carefully:

Practicalities

Welcome activities

We recommend all incoming students to participate in the welcome activities that Stockholm University organises. They occur during a few weeks at the beginning of each semester. The welcome activities are designed to support you as a new student and to introduce you to university life in Stockholm and Sweden.

Notes for our incoming students

If you are an incoming exchange student in the Department of Linguistics, please take note of the information below.

Teaching in the first cycle (BA level) is often conducted in Swedish. Teaching in the second cycle (MA level) is in English. Proof of proficiency in the language of instruction is required.

Pay attention to term periods (1 or 2) when selecting courses. Most of our courses are given over half a semester so you need to distribute your work load across the semester.

Current and future term dates are found at su.se/termdates

Please note that there is a short break oven Christmas and New Year. In some courses yur presence is expected in January too.

Examination

Examinations are held throughout courses and/or at the end of each course.

At least half of the courses you select have to be from the Department of Linguistics, although it is possible to take one or two units from other departments. Our courses are indicated by course codes starting in LI (for example LIM023). Search for courses in Stockholm Universitys course catalogue:

In addition, you may take courses in Swedish for International Students, given by the Department of Swedish and Multilingualism.

Please note!

Admission procedures for exchange students are quite separate from other types and are handled by the departmental exchange coordinator (see below). Keep this in mind when browsing the university's web site, to avoid confusion!
