Seminar with the 2020 and 2021 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry
Event
Date: Wednesday 7 December 2022
Time: 13.00 – 16.05
Location: Swedish Museum of Natural History, Frescativägen 40
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Stockholm University are honored to organize a seminar with the 2020 and 2021 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry. From SU the event is hosted by Prof. Pål Stenmark and Prof. Belén Martín-Matute.Presentations by Prof. Jennifer A Doudna, Prof. Emmanuelle Charpentier, Prof. Benjamin List and Prof. David MacMillan.
A lecture about the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry:
Genetic scissors: a tool for rewriting the code of life
Prof. Jennifer A. Doudna and Prof. Emmanuelle Charpentier have discovered one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors. Using these, researchers can change the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision. This technology has had a revolutionary impact on the life sciences, is contributing to new cancer therapies and may make the dream of curing inherited diseases come true. Prof. Jennifer A. Doudna and Prof. Emmanuelle Charpentier will present their groundbreaking work.
A lecture about the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry:
An ingenious tool for building molecules
Building molecules is a difficult art. Prof. Benjamin List and Prof. David MacMillan were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021 for their development of a precise new tool for molecular construction, organocatalysis. This has had a great impact on synthetic organic chemistry, and has made chemistry more sustainable. Prof. Benjamin List and Prof. David MacMillan will present their groundbreaking work.
