Research subjects

The research at MMK addresses important challenges in energy, environment and health. We work for a better world and a sustainable society.

We focus on developing new materials for a sustainable society, employing green synthesis and sustainable processing routes. We  develop advanced methodologies for chemical analysis and structural characterisation, including analytical chemistry tools, electron crystallography, different spectroscopic methods and multiscale modelling.

Analytical Chemistry

Analytical chemistry research at MMK comprises development of analytical methods and techniques for qualitative and quantitative determination of organic compounds and biomolecules relevant to human health and the environment, as well as characterization of materials.

Inorganic and Strucutral Chemistry

The study of molecular structures, properties, dynamics and properties. The study of molecular structures, properties, dynamics and properties. We push the limitations boundaries of current techniques for structural characterization from micro- to nano-crystals, from crystalline to amorphous materials, from zeolites and metal-organic frameworks to pharmaceutics and proteins. 

Materials Chemistry

Or materials for a sustainable society as we want to call it. The scientists at MMK address issues related to energy storage and conversion, a clean environment, improved human health addressing important social development goals.

Physical Chemistry

All material things around us (and we ourselves) consist of molecules. Molecules consist of atoms, atoms consist of electrons and atomic nuclei. Behavior of all these small parts of materia is determined by the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics.

Advanced analytical techniques for materials, environment, and health

Analytical chemistry research at MMK develops analytical methods and techniques for qualitative and quantitative determination of organic compounds and biomolecules as well as characterization of materials. Sampling, separation science, mass spectrometry, ionization techniques, as well as detection methods and data processing tools.

Electron crystallography/Analytical TEM 

We develop new methods for studying composition and atomic arrangements in solids using state-of-the-art transmission electron microscopes. The techniques include continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED), scanning electron diffraction, high-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (S)TEM, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).

Multi-scale/Computational modelling

Vi utvecklar flerskaliga modelleringsmetoder som sträcker sig från helt atomistiska ab-initio simuleringar till modellering av mesoskala strukturer som bildas av biologiska makromolekyler och nanopartiklar.

Neutron and X-ray crystallography

X-ray and neutron diffraction are complementary tools for characterizing the atomic and molecular structure of crystalline materials, with neutrons adding the possibility of distinguishing isotopes and studying magnetic structure.
