It’s an incredible pathway to personal growth

What was the best experience with making an exchange at NYU?
Impossible to mention one thing. My exchange exceeded whatever expectations I had. Amazing professors, inspiring classmates, great classes, fantastic city (obviously). I have learned so much, academically, creatively, and personally. NYC strikes me as such an open and accepting place: most people are interested in others, kind, warm, and humble.

What have you learned at NYU?
Many things! I have learned that I carry many unknown values and attitudes, that there are so many things I have absolutely no knowledge or understanding of.

What differences have you found in studying at NYU coomparted with SU?
In NYC the four classes you are in throughout the term go on in parallel from beginning to end of the semester. When registration for classes opens, it’s first come, first serve, so make sure to note the time, and make a list of whatever classes you are interested in. A bit of problem solving goes into this; you might be interested in two classes that are scheduled for the same time, for instance. At NYU there is a two week add/drop period, in which students are encouraged to attend all and any classes they are interested in, or on the waitlist for. At the end of a period, you are able to drop and switch (I attended three classes that I ended up swapping, and could not be more happy with my final selections).

Why do you think students should go for an exchange semester?
It’s an incredible pathway to personal growth.

Do you have any advise for future exchange student?
It will cost more money than you think. I am in NYC, and with inflation and rent it is crazy right now, but even outside of that, there have been so many unforeseen costs. There are many scholarships to apply for, do it! As mentioned above, do your research about classes, and attend whatever you are interested in the add drop period. And never mind the stress of all of these practical things — do it even if it seems scary or difficult. Try to go in with an open mind and move with the flow of the experience.
