Abstract

The representation of ocean – ice-shelf interactions has been included in the NEMO ocean model approximately five years ago (Mathiot et al., 2017). In my presentation, I will review what we have learnt from this, in particular in terms of mechanisms controlling ice shelf basal melting in the Amundsen and Weddell seas, Antarctica (effects of tides, winds and currents at the continental shelf break, melt-induced circulation).

The fidelity of our model configurations will also be assessed in comparison to observations, and the main model limitations will be discussed. I will also provide motivations to incorporate dynamic ice sheet models into regional or global climate models, and will discuss our strategy to achieve this goal.
