Title: Investigating the resolution dependence of atmospheric scalar transport in LES simulations
Abstract
This seminar presents an investigation of Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL), focusing on the resolution dependence of turbulent passive scalar transport. The ABL, the lowest part of the atmosphere, is where humans live and conduct most daily activities. Using the Spectral Element Method (SEM) code Nek5000, a passive scalar was introduced at various heights in a mixed shear- and convective-driven ABL to study its transport and dispersion. The analysis reveals that while non-scalar quantities exhibit little resolution dependence, scalar quantities show significant sensitivity to resolution, particularly in the early stages of the simulation. Challenges such as the occurrence of negative scalar concentrations are identified, and proposed solutions are discussed.
