Title: De necessitate maris glacies frangendi

Abstract

Scientists from MISU have been involved with icebreaker expeditions to the Arctic since the beginning of the modern era, starting with the Ymer-80 expedition and continuing on the first Oden expedition in 1991. I became involved in this line of work a little over two decades ago with the expansion of meteorological observations on Oden for the 2001 expedition and have since then been on three more expeditions, sort of spread out in time. This seminar will take a look back, examine reasons why to go to the Arctic on an icebreaker and then take a journey through four expeditions to explore some of the scientific highlights, from my own very myopic perspective. I will end with an outlook for the next 5-10 years, with possibilities and challenges.
