Study with us

Welcome to MISU - the Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University!

Do you want to become a climate expert, oceanographer or an environmental researcher?

Do you want to understand what influences the weather, oceans and the climate of the Earth?

Or just gain insight into how the climate system works?

MISU offers education programmes at Bachelor, Master and PhD level in atmospheric sciences, oceanography and climate physics.  At MISU, about 50 scientists study the dynamics of the atmosphere and the oceans and are in the forefront of climate research.

Research at MISU

Our research covers a wide range of topics in atmospheric sciences and oceanography and stretches from chemical and dynamical processes to polar stratospheric clouds, oceanography, and climate studies. You can read more about MISU research on these topics in the broader page for the whole research area:

MISU research area: Atmosphere, ocean and climate science

If you have further questions about our research, please feel free to contact us by email.

Diversity and collaboration

Scientific diversity is a major strength of our department. About fifty scientists and graduate students with various areas of expertise make use of a range of tools, from pen and paper to computer models and advanced experimental methods, to obtain a better understanding of our changing environment.

Many of MISU's scientists are members of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research and the Baltic Sea Centre at Stockholm University. Our strong international collaborations provide an excellent basis for our research. MISU also has a close relationship with the International Meteorological Institute in Stockholm (IMI).

Career

Weather and climate are key issues today. Knowledge about the atmosphere and the oceans are needed in many different parts of society and the industrial sector. We expect this trend to continue.

The two biggest employers for meteorologists in Sweden are SMHI and the Swedish Armed Forces, where you can work with forecasting, investigations, development and research. Other employers are SVT and TV4. During the last couple of years several private weather agencies have established offices in Sweden, such as for example Foreca.

Many meteorologists and oceanographers also work with environmental, energy and climate related projects, both in the private and public sector. Your knowledge is needed by counties and public authorities, but nowadays also by energy and insurance companies. A great advantage of the Master’s programme in Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography and Climate Physics is that it gives you a broad knowledge before entering the job market. You will not only have studied the atmosphere and oceans, but also quite a lot of mathematics, physics, computer science and programming.

Last but not least the world of today needs more scientists and researchers who can increase our knowledge and understanding of weather and climate, especially when it comes to consequences and preventive measures associated with the changing climate. Our Master’s programme in Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography and Climate Physics gives you access to both national and international PhD studies.

We predict that the Bologna process furthermore will improve the way that master of science students are accepted by employers. One reason for this is that the master degree ranges over five years, which gives the students great opportunities to gain deeper knowledge within their field of studies. There is also time for more practical courses as well as preparatory research activities.

The Bologna process also means that the education has been internationalized. A basic idea is that it should be easier to study courses at other universities in Sweden or abroad. Then it is of course an advantage that the Master’s programmes at Stockholm University has the same length as in many other countries. Both the Bachelor’s and Master’s programme thereby give access to the international job market.

Stockholm University wishes to stay in touch with former students and researchers. Our alumni are part of the valuable network that supports the University in a range of different ways: by being important ambassadors, by engaging in the development of research and education, and by supporting the University financially.

Stockholms University Alumni Network is mainly driven through the alumni portal at Stockholm University Alumni Network. The alumni portal offers the possibility to keep updated on the University and to keep in touch with old friends. In the SU Alumni Network there is a group called 'Meteorologiska institutionen' which you are welcome to join if you have studied at least one semester at MISU.

The Swedish Institute maintains a national alumni portal. Visit the network at Alumni network/Swedish Institute.
