Onboard atmospheric measurements aid understanding of rapid warming in the Arctic

Researchers in the ACAS project have developed an atmospheric observatory onboard the icebreaker Oden, for studying changes in clouds and interactions between the surface and the atmosphere.

Measurements can be made on all expeditions that Oden undertakes, even without the presence of dedicated personnel. These detailed observations will be used to improve the computer models that simulate weather and climate in the Arctic.  The exchange of gases between the ocean and the atmosphere where sea ice is present is also investigated to improve the models and further the understanding of rapid Arctic warming.
