Professor Ian Brooks, University of Leeds, is a leading expert on the atmospheric boundary-layer, the thin layer where the surface of the Earth interacts with the free atmosphere and exchange properties through turbulent fluxes. His focus is on the exchange of energy, gases and particles at the atmosphere-ocean interface where he works mostly with field observations, but also endeavors to evaluate and improve numerical weather and climate models.

The field work is often carried out under extreme conditions, such as at high wind speed over the ocean with large ocean waves or over Arctic sea ice. Ian Brooks has participated in several Arctic expeditions on the Swedish research icebreaker Oden and is a much valued collaborator for several Stockholm University scientists.
