The Swedish island of Gotland faces limited capacity in groundwater reservoirs and increased demand during tourist season. Desalination from the Baltic Sea is a promising method for water supply which will benefit from a forecast of harmful algae blooms.

The polar regions are especially sensitive for climate change and the warming the Arctic is more than twice as fast as elsewhere on Earth. The effects of this warming are large, with a dramatic loss of sea ice as an example.

The project ARTofMELT (Atmospheric rivers and the onset of sea ice melt 2023) centers on an international interdisciplinary research expedition onboard the Swedish research icebreaker Oden to the central Arctic Ocean in May and June 2023.

The project is part of the EU funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) named iMIRACLI (innovative MachIne leaRning to constrain Aerosol-cloud CLimate Impacts) and examines how aerosols affect the Arctic mixed-phase clouds.

MATS (Mesospheric Airglow/Aerosol Tomography and Spectroscopy) is a Swedish satellite mission designed to investigate atmospheric waves. Large uncertainties in the distribution of such waves is a limiting factor for atmospheric models in predicting future changes in the mesosphere, the region bordering space at 50-100 km above sea level.

Will the ice continue to disappear at an ever-increasing rate as the exposed ocean surface absorbs increasing amounts of solar radiation? Or might conditions become progressively more favorable for biological activity and associated cloud-formation, decreasing the amount of solar-radiation received at the surface?

MOCCHA (Microbiology-Ocean-Cloud-Coupling – in the High Arctic) – ARCTIC OCEAN 2018 was an international and interdisciplinary research expedition to the central Arctic Ocean during the summer of 2018.

By studying the oceanic and atmospheric overturning circulation it is possible to for example track the heat, salt and moisture exchanges between the low and high latitudes.
