Title:
The role of autophagy in the metabolism of amyloid beta and tau in Alzheimer’s disease.
Abstract:
Autophagy is a key cellular function controlling protein homeostasis. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by impaired protein homeostasis including aberrant accumulation and aggregation of amyloid beta hyperphosphorylated tau. Using mouse models of Alzheimer’s we show that autophagy is directly involved in the turnover of both amyloid beta and tau and that lack of autophagy in excitatory neurons is detrimental and leads to neurodegeneration.
