Abstract:

The neutrino is famously known as the "ghost particle", because it so rarely interacts with matter.  Born in nuclear reactions in stars and galaxies, trillions of neutrinos pass through you every second without touching a single atom. Yet while it is hard to detect them, it is not impossible.  A giant detector buried two kilometers deep in the ice at the South Pole can record the rarest interactions of neutrinos with matter.  In this talk I will describe the IceCube Observatory and some of the extreme objects in the Universe that it can see using neutrinos.
