Application and admission
Have you found a course or programme and want to apply? Read below to find information about eligibility and the application process.
In order to become a student at the Department of Physics, you need to meet the eligibility criteria for the course or programme that you want to take. The requirements are different for courses and programmes, so please read the information carefully. Courses and programs which are given in English, require you to show proficiency in English.
Read more about the English requirements here
In addition, each course or programme has specific requirements, often previous university-level studies in physics and mathematics. These are listed in the course catalogue.
Specific requirements for the physics programmes
All our master’s programmes require a Bachelor’s degree (BSc). For our programmes in Computational Physics, Physics and Theoretical Physics, you need to have previous studies equivalent to a BSc in physics (meaning at least 90 ECTS credits in physics). All these programmes assume good knowledge of quantum mechanics. For the Master's programme in Computational Physics it is desirable to have good knowledge of at least one programming language.
Our Master's programme in Medical Radiation Physics requires previous studies in both physics as well as medical radiation physics. The requirements in physics are generally met through a BSc degree in physics. If you have not studied medical radiation physics at an undergraduate level, we recommend our course package in Medical Radiation Physics.
How to apply for a Master's programme
All applications, both regarding courses and programmes, are handled through the national portal universityadmissions.se. Here you will find information about the application process, and what documents you will need to submit to show that you fulfill the requirements. The deadline for applications to courses are April 15 for the autumn semester and October 15 for the spring semester.
Exchange students
If you are an exchange student, you will instead be admitted directly by us. Please contact the international coordinator for more information.

Application dates for Master’s programmes
January 15 – Deadline for applicants from outside EU/EES.
April 15 – Deadline for applicants from EU/EES countries.
However, we urge all applicants to apply before January 15 since the evaluation process often is lengthy and a late admission does not leave enough time for the applicant to find accommodation and make necessary arrangements.
The Master's programmes start in late August.
Application to latter part of a programme
Have you already studied mathematics and physics at another university or college? Then you might be eligible for courses during the latter part of one of our master programmes. In order to be admitted to the latter part of a programme you have to make an official application using the application form bellow. Instructions can be found in the form. If you have questions please contact studievagledare@fysik.su.se.

Practical information
There are numerous practical things to keep in mind when you apply and get admitted to Stockholm University as an international student. The Stockholm University website has a collection of useful information and checklists:
Tuition fees, residence permits and scholarships
Tuition fees
Individuals who are citizens of countries outside of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are required to pay application and tuition fees. There are some exceptions to this general rule.
Residence permit
If you are a citizen from a country outside the EU/EEA, you may need to apply for a residence permit. Among the requirements for a residence permit is showing proof that you have financial support secured for your period of studies in Sweden. For more details, see the Swedish Migration Agency's website.
Scholarships
There are a number of scholarships available to Master’s students who need to pay tuition fees, both from Stockholm University and other organisations. You can find more information on the Stockholm University pages about scholarships.
Housing
Stockholm University rents and manages furnished rooms and apartments which are owned by other landlords in Stockholm. These are available to international students at Stockholm University, with priority given to exchange students. In addition, the Housing Office also provides a lot of useful information on how to find accommodation on your own.
