Marion Mallweger on Travelling by train to conferences

Marion Mallweger tells us about her experiences with travelling by train to conferences. She is a PhD and is a member of the research group Trapped Ion Quantum Technologies in the Condensed Matter and Quantum Optics division at Fysikum. - I like to travel by train because it gives you more the feeling of travelling and can be quite comfortable. It is also often more environmental friendly than flying.

When did you last travel by train and to which conference/seminar?

"My last train travel was for the DPG conference in Hanover germany but I will also travel again this week to innsbruck for meetings with collaborators and then a follow up conference (CLEO) in Munich.

How did you book the train?

"I booked the Euronight train from Stockholm to Hamburg via SJ and then the follow up connections in Germany directly with the german train operator. Since I would have missed the night train connection on the way back from my Munich conference I combined the trip with an overnight stay in Berlin.

How was your travel experience?

"I like travelling by train because it gives me more the feeling of travelling. By now with flights it can change so quickly. I think it is nice to be more aware of how far you're travelling and what impact you want to create with it.
Especially the Euronight train between Stockholm and Hamburg/Berlin makes it comfortable to travel due to their compartments with beds where you can sleep over night.
And in Germany you also have wifi connection in the trains.

What is your recommendation to other train travelers?

"Don't hesitate to check your travelling by train itinerary with Fysikum, see contact info below.
With the option to take a overnight stay in a hotel for long travels it makes it quite comfortable to travel that way.

The administrative division will have a lower staffing level during the summer, especially during the weeks 26-33, i.e. June 26 to August 20. We therefore ask you to bear in mind that it may take a little longer to get help with non-urgent matters, and especially to prepare and submit summer related matters well before week 26.
