Get to know our new PhD students

This autumn we are welcoming five new PhD students to our department. Environmental politics, political economy, the tension between democratic theory and public administration, and comparative politics, are some of the topics that the new PhD students are interested in.

Magnus Anker holds an M.Sc. in Political Science from Stockholm University, and his research interest primary lie in political economy with a focus on voting behavior, representation, and party competition. During his PhD, Magnus will join the GECCO project, which centers on understanding the causes and consequences of environmental protests in a comparative perspective.

Julia Feine holds a Master's degree in Political Science with a special focus on environmental social sciences. Before moving to Sweden, Julia studied International Relations in Germany. She has previously worked at the Department of Political Science as a research assistant. Her PhD project is connected to the Living with WildFire (Li-Fi) research project. Julia is particularly interested in researching environmental discourses, future imaginaries and nature cultures.

Silva Mertsola holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Copenhagen and a Master's degree in Political Philosophy from the London School of Economics. Prior to starting her doctoral studies, she worked as a consultant in public administration for many years. Silva is currently pursuing her doctoral thesis in political theory and intends to research the tension between democratic theory and public administration.

Joseph Noonan specializes in comparative politics, particularly focusing on the analysis of individuals' behaviors and attitudes using quantitative methods. Before receiving his MSc in Political Science from Uppsala University in 2022, he worked for a number of years in research-adjacent roles in the public, private, and academic sectors.

Isabella Strindevall holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Political Science, specializing in environmental social studies from Stockholm University. She is interested in issues relating to climate adaptation, environmental justice, and political ecology. She is particularly interested in how global market forces and governance structures condition and shape socio-ecological processes at the local scale.

ABOUT PHD STUDIES
The aim of the doctoral programme in political science is to give the student specialized knowledge within the subject field, a thorough training in research methods and a good understanding of the problems occurring in the research and the practical application.
