Leave and discontinuation of studies

The circumstances for approved leave from studies are regulated in the Statute Book of the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHRFS) §3, §4 och §5.

For absence from studies to be considered an approved leave from studies it needs to have been applied for by the student and approved by the department before the start of the absence.

Resuming studies after an approved leave is tied to a specific date – if the student stays absent from studies after this date the student loses their guaranteed spot on the course or programme and resuming studies is subject to availability of an open spot.

Circumstances in which approved leave of study can be granted are:

  • Parental leave and other child care, military or civilian service or student union assignments. It can also be a temporary probationary employment according to section 12 of the ordinance (2012: 332) on certain employments in the Swedish Armed Forces or service in the Swedish Armed Forces for those who are employed as part-time group officers, soldiers or sailors according to this ordinance.
  • Exceptional reasons regarding social and/or medical circumstances or other extraordinary circumstances.
