Application and step-by-step instructions

Before, during and after an exchange, there are practical matters to plan and execute. Feel free to attend the information sessions regularly held to receive guidance. You will also receive information via email and meetings after submitting your application.

The application process consists of two steps. First, you apply to be nominated for exchange studies via the Department of Psychology's agreements or for exchange studies via central agreements. After being nominated, you apply directly to the partner university.

Application for nomination for exchange within Europe through the Department of Psychology takes place one semester before an exchange, and for central agreements (Civis, Nordlys, North2North, and bilateral agreements outside Europe) approximately one year before.

Apply for nomination via central agreements

Below are instructions for applying for exchange studies through the Department of Psychology's Erasmus agreements.

Eligibility requirements

To apply for exchange via the Department of Psychology's Erasmus+ agreements, you must:

  • Be a registered and active student at the Department of Psychology with the intention of obtaining a degree from Stockholm University.
  • Not have previously participated in an Erasmus+ exchange at the same level of study for more than six months.
  • Study full-time for 2–12 months at the host university.
  • Be able to credit your studies abroad at Stockholm University after the exchange.
  • Upon departure, be able to present approved studies comprising at least 30 credits in psychology.
  • Demonstrate independence, proactivity, personal suitability, and maturity for exchange studies.
  • Be a good representative of Stockholm University.
  • Respective receiving institutions may also, for example, require documented language skills, minimum grade requirements, and specific eligibility requirements for courses.

Selection criteria

In case of competition with more applicants than available exchange positions, selection is based on:

  1. Priority to students who have not previously participated in exchange studies through Stockholm University.
  2. Points based on the number of approved credits within the Department of Psychology and grades in the courses.
  3. Personal letter.
  4. Work that benefits the Department of Psychology and/or Stockholm University as well as other involvement, such as association merits, research experience, or other relevant exchange-related activities.

In case of equal merit, an interview may be conducted.

Step 1: Prepare for the application

You can choose to apply to 1–3 universities. Once you have chosen universities, you can start preparing your application. Prepare the two documents that you must include with your application. These are:

Preliminary course selections

Specify your preliminary course selections at the universities where you are applying for exchange positions and which courses they correspond to at SU if they are to be credited within a program.

Preliminary course selection form (Word) (178 Kb)

The courses you choose should correspond to full-time studies. You need to find the courses on the respective university's website.

Note that these course selections are preliminary. If you are nominated, they can be adjusted when you make the final application to the partner university.

Letter of motivation

The letter should not exceed one A4 page and should be written in English. The letter should be addressed to Stockholm University, not to the host university.

Letter of motivation (Word) (81 Kb)

  • Explain your choice of exchange country and university.
  • Describe how you are a good ambassador for the Department of Psychology/Stockholm University, why you specifically want to participate in the exchange, and how you hope it will help you develop both academically and personally.
  • Describe any experiences from involvement or work within the university; for example student union assignments, subject council assignments, teaching assistant, etc.
  • Describe your language skills in English and in the language spoken at the host university. No certificates should be attached.

Step 2: Fill out and submit the online form

The application is made in the Mobility Online system. Log in via the link below (available during the application period) and follow the instructions.

Link to the online form will be published on August 13.

Once you have filled out and submitted the form, you will receive an email to confirm your personal information. Follow the instructions in the email to proceed, finalize, and confirm your application.

Step 3: Finalize and confirm the application

To complete and submit your application:

  • Confirm your personal information according to the instructions in the email.
  • Then press "Back to general overview" and upload your two documents, "Preliminary course selection" and "Letter of motivation" (see above under Step 1).
  • Once you have uploaded the documents, press "Click to confirm and submit."
  • You will now receive a confirmation email, and all you have to do is wait for the decision.

Step 4: Wait for notice

When the final application deadline has passed, processing of all applications begins. The selection process takes different lengths of time depending on the number of applicants but usually takes about 1–2 weeks.

Decisions will be sent via email. You will receive a notification regardless of whether you will be nominated to a partner university or not. Decisions will be sent from exchange@psychology.su.se.

Step 5: If you are offered to be nominated

If you are offered to be nominated to a partner university, you should respond yes or no according to the instructions in the email.

Think carefully about your choice, as your place may be given to another student if you decline.

Step 6: If you have accepted to be nominated

If you have accepted an exchange position, you should wait for further information from the international coordinator at the Department of Psychology. You will also be invited to a mandatory information meeting.

When you receive further instructions about the next steps, read them carefully and follow them.

After being nominated, you will apply to the partner university. Exact dates and procedures may vary depending on the partner university.
