Classics seminar: Experimenta in medieval magical handbooks (13th-15th century)

Seminar

Date: Tuesday 9 January 2024

Time: 16.00 – 17.30

Location: B479 and on zoom*

Andrea Franchetto, PhD Student at SU, will give a seminar.

In this seminar, I will be sharing various magical procedures (experimenta) from different textual traditions that were popular in southern and northern Europe during the late middle ages. These procedures involve interactions with demons, angels, and planetary spirits. Examples of these handbooks include the Picatrix, the Liber iuratus Honorii, and the Clavicula Salomonis. There are also miscellanies compiled by practitioners, such as the Codex latinus Monacensis 849, preserved at the Bavarian State Library. I will present the Latin text from critical editions whenever possible and transcriptions from the manuscripts when not. Additionally, I will provide translations of the texts. During the seminar, I would like to focus on evaluating the translations and transcriptions.
