The Romance Seminar: Alicia Noemí Salomone

The Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957).

The long journey from the Elqui Valley to the Nobel Prize in Literature’. I will present Mistral’s trajectory as a writer, intellectual and diplomat during the inter-war period, through which she became an internationally recognised figure, obtaining the most relevant literary award in 1945. I will talk about her poetry and essay writing and provide examples with translations into English.

Professor Salomone’s research has focused on memory, identity, language, and cultural production in Latin America. She also has an extensive body of work on gender and women’s writing.
