We also offer Post-graduate education, which leads to a Ph D degree within the areas of Romance languages and Classical languages.
French
With its several hundred million speakers worldwide, French is a key language to know if you wish to travel, get a job abroad, work from Sweden with international partners or become a language teacher.

Greek (ancient)
Ancient Greek is one of the foundations of modern Western culture. When you study Greek, you will not only learn a language but also have access to a rich selection of literature and philosophical and scientific texts that are still relevant for our modern society.

Italian
Italy has always been prominent in music, art and literature. Italian culture and politics have had great influence on the Western world. Italian is therefore a good choice if you are interested in topics such as musicology, history or social science.

Latin
Latin and Greek were Europe's great languages during antiquity and also later. They are no longer spoken but still affect us to a great extent. We read antique literature, see Greek dramas and use daily loan words from the classic languages. As one of the foundations of Western culture, they have formed our thinking and our way of expressing ourselves.

Latin American Studies
Ever since 1492, when Christopher Columbus was discovered by the local population, Latin America has been a venue for people, languages and ideas. Modernity and tradition have blended, as have Christianity and local systems of beliefs. When attending courses in Latin American Studies you are approaching a continent that never ceases to fascinate us.

PhD Studies - Third-cycle studies
Doctoral studies lead to a PhD, the highest academic degree in Sweden. At the Department of Romance Studies and Classics, you can earn a PhD in either Romance languages or Classics. The PhD programme is four years, but it can be combined with teaching or other tasks at the department, which extends the study period. The studies include courses and dissertation work. You will develop your skills in a scientific approach, learn to think critically and analytically, and receive training to formulate theoretically relevant research questions independently and answer them using adequate methods. In addition, you will have the opportunity to get ethical awareness. You will also be able to work independently as well as to collaborate with other researchers.
The aim of the PhD studies is to lay a foundation for further research activities and to make the doctoral student suitable to perform tasks that require a scientific approach and / or a very high level of competence in the subject area.

Romance Languages
Within the field of Romance Languages, you can study courses in literature and linguistics at advanced level in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian. In addition to courses in the language of your choice, you will study courses with students from the other languages. This creates a dynamic and inspiring environment.
Summer courses
Application for summer courses opens on 17 February.
The Department of Romance Studies and Classics offers summer courses taught in English within the subjects French and Latin American Studies.
The application period is 17 February – 17 March 2025, and you can apply via www.universityadmissions.se
