Cheating, disruption and plagiarism

Plagiarism, cheating and disruption is not permitted at Stockholm University and may lead to expelling from the university. It is therefore especially important that you as a student keep informed of what is applicable.

I don't intend to cheat, do I have to read this anyway?

Since it is not always easy for you as a student to know where the boundaries are, it is a really good idea to check out what is considered as breach of rules.

With the availability of easily accessible Internet-based information today, it is quick and easy to search for knowledge on many subjects. When it comes to your own writing at the university, it is important not to use such sources without clearly identifying where the information comes from. Copying texts is called plagiarism and is not allowed. Even if changes are made in the text, it is plagiarism. Note that this also applies to shorter pieces in a text. If a sentence is copied, specify where it comes from.

The use of other students' examinations, in whole or in part, is not permitted either.

To use things that you have written in another context is called self-plagiarism and is not permitted either.

In order to avoid accidental plagiarism, it is important for you to be familiar with the academic rules that apply to citation and source reference. Read more in “Guidelines for disciplinary procedures at Stockholm University”, see link in the section below, "What happens?"

It is important to pay close attention to the instructions for examinations. Unless otherwise stated, examinations must be done individually. Read the course instructions carefully and ask the teacher if you are uncertain. It is also cheating to have inappropriate information or unauthorized means at a written exam. This includes mobile phones, so make sure that phones and bags are left at the place indicated by the staff.

It is also not allowed to interfere with teaching, examinations or other activities at the department. It also includes disobedience against teachers, supervisors and staff.

For example, to write an absent student's name on the attendance list for a mandatory class is counterfeit and must be reported to the police.

Any suspicion of cheating must be reported to the head of the department or the director of studies at the department by the examination officers or the examiner. If an offence is suspected, a report is sent to the vice president of Stockholm University (SU), who commits the matter to the Disciplinary Board at Stockholm University (SU). If the accused student is found to be guilty, it leads to termination of studies for a period of time.

If you are unsure of what is considered plagiarism, please use the tools available to avoid plagiarism.
