Study abroad

The international student exchange programmes in Europe gives you the opportunity to spend a part of your training at one of Stockholm University’s many partner universities in Europe.

 

When you study as an exchange student via Erasmus+, you are exempt from any tuition fees at the host university, and you will also receive a grant.
We have Erasmus+ agreements for Master's students at the following universities:

  • University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Courses at basic or advanced level
  • Universität Wien, Austria. Advanced level only. Language requirement German if there are not enough courses in English.
  • Universität zu Köln, Germany - Advanced level only. Language requirement German If there are not enough courses in English.

To be eligible to participate in Erasmus+ student mobility you need to fulfil the following requirements (call 2020): 

  • Have completed at least a year of full-time studies at higher education level (60 credits) before departure for Erasmus+ studies.
  • Be a registered and active student at Stockholm University, where you intend to graduate. (Students on study leave are not eligible)
  • Study full time at the host university for a minimum of 90 days or do full-time work at an eligible organization for a minimum of 60 days, but no more than 360 days per education cycle (bachelor, master or PhD level).
  • Not been on an Erasmus+ mobility before during the same study cycle so that the total mobility period exceeds 360 days (previously and planned mobility)
  • Have a signed Learning Agreement before departure.
  • Take a language assessment (OLS).
  • Submit Arrival Certificate, Certificate of Attendance and Erasmus+ Participant report during and after the mobility.
  • Not accept any other scholarships from the EU or the Swedish Council for Higher Education at the same time.

Students selected and nominated as Erasmus+ students, who meet the requirements, are required to submit an online-form in the Erasmus+ portal and may apply for an Erasmus+ mobility grant.

How you apply

With your application, you must include a personal letter of motivation in English, addressed to the Department of Sociology. Describe your choice of university and how it relates to your current studies and how you are a good ambassador for your department/university and why you want to participate in the exchange, and how you hope it will help you develop both academically and on a personal level. You must only write one letter regardless of how many universities you apply to.

Stockholm University is part of the university CIVIS – European Civic University Alliance. CIVIS is an alliance within Erasmus+ which in total includes eight universities. 

All students at Stockholm University, regardless of subject or level can apply for Erasmus+ exchange studies within the CIVIS alliance.
All students offered a place through CIVIS can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship.

Do you want to study abroad without having to spend a whole semester away? The CIVIS Alliance, in which Stockholm University is a participant, offers several courses for students who want to study a short term course at one or more partner universities in Europe.

CIVIS-courses

  • are free of charge for Civis-students (with some exceptions for fee-paying students)
  • provide the opportunity to apply for funding for the trip and accommodation (application at the home university)

north2north is a network within the University of the Arctic, where universities and colleges around the Arctic Circle cooperate.

The student exchange programme offers scholarships and placements for one or two semesters at one of the program's partner universities in the United States (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Iceland, Finland and Norway. Students can apply for a north2north scholarship through the Swedish Institute. 
All students at Stockholm University, regardless of subject, can apply to north2north. However, students who study courses with emphasis on the Northern and Arctic regions are prioritised.
