"The Master’s Programme in Demography was a great foundation for the work I am doing now"
Our alumna Maria Hornung studied our Master's Programme in Demography and is now enrolled as a PhD student at the Humboldt University of Berlin.
What are you doing now?
I am enrolled in the PhD Program Dynamics ("The Dynamics of Demography, Democratic Processes and Public Policy") at the Humboldt University of Berlin, where I also teach at the chair of microsociology.
How did our Master's Programme in Demography help you realize your professional goals?
The Master’s Programme in Demography was a great foundation for the work I am doing now. I highly benefit from the courses taught at Stockholm University both in the interdisciplinary PhD program I am enrolled in as well as in my own work. The experiences I gained while working as a research assistant with Juho Härkönen and Sunnee Billingsley at SUDA not only encouraged me to pursue a PhD but also provided great insights into academic work.
How did you like living and working in Stockholm?
Working at SUDA was great. I really enjoyed the open and international atmosphere at the department. During my stay in Stockholm, I lived in a student area not far from the campus. This was a perfect opportunity to meet many other international students and live close to nature. I still miss the two bodies of water in close proximity where I could swim in summer and ice skate in winter.
How come you chose SUDA and Stockholm University for your master studies?
I already lived in Stockholm and wanted to do a research master that focused on data work and I came across demography and thought it was an interesting field and matched my sociological background.
