Paola Valero was one of the four invited keynote speakers at the international research conference PME, held at the University of Haifa, Israel, in July 16-21. Her plenary “Mathematical subjectivation: death sentence or chances for a terrestrial life?” provided a critical look at how the current types of subjectivities promoted through mathematics teaching and learning may not be fruitful for addressing the current challenges of climate change in its multiple dimensions.

– My lecture is based on the research conducted in the research group SOCAME and the graduate school RelMaS, says Paola. It is great that our research is in demand and has such great relevance internationally. To be a part of such a large context spurs us as a group and makes it even more fun to continue advancing our research on mathematics education and sustainability.

The PME conference is one of the most significant international conferences in the field of mathematics education. PME is devoted to rigorous, systematic research that seeks to understand mathematical thinking, learning, and teaching.
